Framing a place-based investment strategy for Newport

Newport is powering ahead when it comes to productivity. In fact, its growth since 2008 has been almost double the Welsh average.

With strong roots in advanced manufacturing, semiconductors, clean energy and digital tech, the city is carving out a place in the high-value economy.

Despite this progress, Newport has its fair share of challenges, including a skills gap, poor health outcomes, and the need for infrastructure investment, which are all slowing its full potential.

This study demonstrates that Newport needs a joined-up approach:

  • A shared vision – Local leaders, businesses and communities pulling in the same direction.
  • Better skills and training – Education and training that matches future jobs, and schemes to keep graduates in the city.
  • Smarter connectivity – Faster broadband and new rail links to Cardiff and Bristol.
  • Sector clusters – Building innovation hubs for semiconductors, fintech and advanced manufacturing.
  • Collaboration and trust – Bringing together government, industry, academia and communities to spark innovation.

Newport has the talent, ambition and sector strengths to thrive, but it needs strong partnership and investment to turn potential into reality.
