Scotland’s National Productivity Week 2026: Strengthening productivity through purpose, innovation and place

RPF logo for ScotlandScotland’s productivity challenge is at a pivotal moment.  In a fast-changing global economy, productivity is not about working longer hours; it is about creating greater value from our talent, ideas and resources. The Scotland Productivity Forum’s National Productivity Week provides a timely moment to focus on three interconnected pillars: purpose, innovation and place.

Purpose must lead the way. Productivity is strongest when economic performance aligns with social and environmental ambition. Organisations that embed clear purpose – whether advancing the transition to net zero, improving public services or supporting fair work – see higher engagement, stronger collaboration and better outcomes.

Scotland’s commitment to a just transition is already shaping growth in renewable energy, advanced manufacturing and green finance. By investing in skills, leadership and fair work practices, businesses can unlock creativity and discretionary effort: the real drivers of sustainable productivity.

Innovation turns ambition into results. Scotland’s research and enterprise base, including institutions such as the University of Edinburgh and the University of Glasgow, continues to power advances in data, life sciences and engineering. Yet innovation is not limited to high-tech sectors. Productivity gains often come from adopting existing technologies more effectively, improving management capability and fostering continuous improvement.

Supporting small and medium-sized enterprises to digitalise, collaborate and scale is essential to spreading innovation across the economy.

Finally, place matters. Scotland’s cities, towns and rural communities each contribute distinct strengths, from energy expertise in Aberdeen to financial services in Edinburgh. Connecting businesses, universities and civic institutions within regional ecosystems strengthens resilience and competitiveness. With the right infrastructure, skills and leadership, productivity gains can translate into inclusive growth and higher living standards nationwide.

By aligning purpose, innovation and place, Scotland can build a more dynamic, inclusive and sustainable economy for the future.

The Scotland Productivity Forum is running eight events across Scotland for National Productivity Week that will explore these themes.
