Why does the UK do so well on the Global Innovation Index? Productivity Puzzles Season 2, Episode 10 was released on Thursday, 9 November 2023

How do we measure innovation and compare it across countries? Although the UK is doing well as an innovation nation, it is underperforming on productivity. This episode of Productivity Puzzles takes a deep dive into the latest 2023 Global Innovation Index (GII). The UK ranks fourth on the GII, showcasing strengths in R&D, scientific output, and intangible asset intensity. Our guests discuss why this has not translated into productivity gains.

In 2007, the Global Innovation Index was first published by INSEAD, a business school in France. Since 2021, it has been issued by the World Intellectual Property Organisation. It’s a global index, covering innovation inputs and innovation outputs, and composed of many relevant indicators for almost all countries in the world. The United Kingdom ranks fourth on the GII, only behind Switzerland, Sweden and the US. The UK is also ahead of the other five countries in the G7, including Germany (8th), France (11th), Japan (13th), Canada (15th), and Italy (26th).

Host Professor Bart van Ark is joined by:

  • Sacha Wunsch-Vincent, Head of Section, Economics and Statistics Division, and co-editor of The GII at the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
  • Anna Valero, Deputy Director of Programme on Innovation and Diffusion (POID) and Distinguished Policy Fellow, Centre for Economic Performance, London School of Economics.
