Career

Nathan Critch is a Research Associate at The Productivity Institute, based in the School of Social Science at the University of Manchester. Working within the Institutions & Governance theme, Nathan’s research explores the ways in which the longstanding pathologies of Britain’s political institutions constrain productivity growth in the UK. This research takes a specific focus on the interplay between regional political institutions and the central British state and the question of regional economic inequality as a key driver of Britain’s sluggish economic productivity. Nathan completed his PhD in Political Science at the University of Birmingham in 2023, which examined the role of public inquiries within British governance and the management of serious crises, having previously completed both his BA in Political Science and MA in British Politics and the State there. Nathan’s research has been published in British Politics and the British Journal of Politics and International Relations, he has contributed to both The Conversation and LSE British Politics and Policy and has given testimony as an expert witness before the House of Lords Select Committee on Statutory Inquiries.
